Chasing the Cod: Jerseymen in Canada
Temporary Exhibition Gallery at the Jersey Museum
3 April 2007

Chasing the Cod: Jerseymen in Canada tells the story of the intrepid Jerseymen who for four centuries sailed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic to make their fortunes fishing for cod on the Grand Banks off the coast of Newfoundland, and in the Gulf of St Lawrence. The exhibition provides a fascinating insight into the everyday lives of the Jersey families who in the 19 th century plied their trade in the small promontory and sheltered harbour of Point St Peter, Gaspé, first as fishermen and then as traders and carriers. Thousands of miles from their Island roots these ex-pats lived lifestyles little different to domestic and commercial life in Jersey, even sending their children home to be educated and exporting their furniture and clothing to Canada. The monopoly system they developed became their downfall as fortunes made from the Cod Trade were wiped out by banking scandals in Jersey in the late 19 th century. Read more....

Evidence from a 19 th century ‘crime of passion’ murder investigation has been deposited with the Jersey Heritage Trust. Senior Archivist Linda Romeril said the photographs are a fascinating early example of pictorial evidence and its uses in criminal cases.

“The photographs show the area where John Francis, a resident of St Ouen, was found after being assaulted about the face and head with a blunt instrument while walking home from Pooley’s Hotel at Greve de Lecq on 22 1894. He was discovered unconscious the following morning and was taken back to his cottage at L’Etacq where he died on Christmas Eve,” she said. Read more....

The hoard dates from the Late Iron Age (1 st century BC) and contained at least 2,500 coins and pieces of jewellery. The coins, which were hand minted, are of Armorican (modern day Brittany and Normandy) Belgic and British origin. The majority were from the Coriosolites tribe who were based around Rance in the area of modern day St Malo and Dinan. Read more...
