St. Peter "Transport" Despite the Occupation people still have to move around the Island. As normal transport patterns are disrupted, new solutions are found. Large numbers of private vehicals are requisitioned by the Germans and shipped to France. They are paid for in Occupation marks which are then used by the States to purchase necessary supplies from France. The petrol shortages result in some novel solutions to the transport question. For some, horsepower takes on a different meaning. Another solution is the gas-powered vehical. For most people, including the German garrison, it is a choice between walking or the bicycle. Parts become so scarce that, by 1944, tyres are a luxury. The railway is reintroduced into the Island by the German forces who need it to transport building material around the Island. A railway bridge is even built across the English Harbour. The family buys its bread from Mr Gilbert who, for a while, uses a horse to pull his bread delivery van.
