[10] St. John "By-passed"

On 6 June 1944 Allied armies land on the beaches of Normandy. The war in Europe is entering its final phase.

On the evening of 5 June 1944 planes can be heard overhead. These prove to be the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Air Force. At dawn on 6 June 1944, anti-aircraft batteries are in action and a gun position on the north coast is strafed. 12 June 1944, German patrol boats are attacked in the Inner Roads near Elizabeth Castle. 15 June, the castle itself is bombed. 9 August, the castle is attacked once again and machine gunned. A week later on 16 August, St.Malo surrenders and Jersey is cut off. Lacking air raid shelters the family seeks protection beneath the kitchen table.
