la hougue bie 2,000 years older than the pyramids, La Hougue Bie has dominated the landscape of Jersey for thousands of years. A sacred and mythical place, this Neolithic dolmen and mound covers an ancient tomb, considered one of the finest in Europe. Enter the tomb to fully experience the spiritual beauty and peace of this superb archaeological site. The site has experienced many changes since 3,000 BC. In the 6th century an attempt was made to Christianise the site and in medieval times a chapel was built on top of the mound. During the German Occupation of Jersey, a command bunker was built in the grounds as part of Hitler’s extensive fortification programme. Today it houses a very moving memorial to the forced workers from all over occupied Europe who died in the Channel Islands. Adjacent to the mound is the Island’s Archaeology and Geology Museum packed full of the Island’s treasures, including Celtic coins and Age axes and swords.
