elizabeth castle

Built on an islet in St Aubin’s Bay, Elizabeth Castle has defended Jersey from the French for more than 300 years.  Elizabeth Castle was built in 1590 and was once the home of Jersey’s Tudor Governor Sir Walter Raleigh.

Climb to the top of the mount and take in the views across the bay and St Helier, or look out to sea and scan the horizon for potential attack by the French fleet.  At the castle you’ll find displays on the history of the garrison, the development of the cannon and the story of the famous Jersey Militia.

Experience a soldier’s life by joining in the midday parade or watching a demonstration of swordmanship.  Time your visit to include the noonday ‘call to arms’ by Gunner Gilman, followed by the firing of the castle cannon. *

The castle is accessible at low tide by foot or, why not take the pirate themed castle ferry, which will transport you at high or low tide across the bay to and from the castle (a small charge applies).

*If you wish to take part in the midday parade, please leave enough time for your voyage by boat or foot across the bay (approx 30 mins).

On the island in St Aubin's Bay. Walk across the causeway from West Park Slipway (opposite the Grand Hotel) at low tide or catch the castle ferry (extra charge), which runs approximately every 20 minutes back and forth during castle opening hours.

Due to the unique location of the castle, access can occasionally be restricted by the tide and weather. The Amphibious vehicles will operate at all times except when the tide is high and the wind is strong creating a rough sea. If the wind is strong on the day of your planned visit please telephone the Castle Ferry Kiosk on 01534 638888 to find out opening times.
