Land registers

The Land Registry documents contain details of all land transactions passed in Jersey from 1602 to the 1960s. These documents contain vital information for house historians tracing the
ownership of their property.

The German occupation of Jersey during the Second World War commenced on the 1st July 1940 and eventually ended on 9th May 1945. The Occupation remains one of the most fascinating periods in Jersey's recent history. Sources for those interested in researching the period include: -

  • Bailiff's Chambers Occupation and Liberation files
  • The Law Officers' Department files (files from the Felcommandant are included)

The Occupation recorded

Family History is the single most popular research subject at the Jersey Archive and a fast growing leisure activity worldwide. Family Historians delight in finding out about their ancestors and of course seeing if there are any skeletons in the closet. Research sources for Family Historians are: -

  • Jersey's census records dating from 1841 to 1901.
  • Wills and Testaments relating to movable property from 1660 to 1948
  • Church Records relating to 6 of the 12 parishes, the Methodist churches and independent churches, include baptism, marriage and burial registers.
  • In January 1941 all islanders over the age of 14 were required to carry an ID card with them at all times. This official set of 33,000 identity cards is the most thorough photographic record of the island population ever undertaken. Children under the age of 14 were recorded on the back of their father's card.
