Social History page 1 | page 2

The social history collection is large and very varied, tending to include all those objects which fall outside the more tightly defined art and archaeology collections.

The most significant parts of the social history collection relate to the Victorian period in Jersey, the German Occupation of the island during the Second World War, the Maritime Museum and Hamptonne Country Life Museum. Objects held include domestic objects, tools and machinery, items of clothing and ephemera.

Rural collections at Hamptonne Country Life Museum

The social history collection includes many items associated with Jersey's agricultural past. Some examples of typical 19th century tools and farm vehicles are displayed at Hamptonne, including ploughs, harrows, scarifiers, a hay cart and a cider dray. There is also a display at the entrance of tools used to farm the famous Jersey Royal potato. Due to limited exhibition space, however, many of the larger items from the agricultural collections are kept in storage and are available to view by appointment.

As well as the agricultural items displayed at Hamptonne, a large number of both historic and reproduction objects and furniture have been used to furnish the rooms of the main Hamptonne house and the smaller Langlois house. The domestic interiors of the 17th and 18th centuries have been recreated in detail so that visitors can step back in time and experience rural life in Jersey at these periods in her history.
