Jersey is well known today for its more wealthy residents. In the past, some of the more affluent members of Jersey Society have donated a considerable amount of their money to establish charities.

Julia Westaway was the daughter of Nathaniel Westaway and his wife Anne Alexandre. Her father was a builder who began with a small business and built it into a much larger one. He died a very rich man in 1852. Julia lived to 81 and, in 1895, she made her will leaving the bulk of her money to charitable causes. It provided a crèche and a day- nursery for babies, a fund for poor people who had never before claimed parish relief, and a fund to provide clothes and books for elementary schoolchildren. When she died in 1901 she left the sum of £92,000.

The Jersey Archive holds the records of the Westaway Trust dating from Julia Westaway’s death in 1901. The records include; ledgers of payments made for clothing and shoes for school children and payments to the poor of each parish, contracts and legal documents from the estate including the testament of Julia Westaway and an inventory of the estate of Julia Westaway at the time of her death.

Mary Bartlett, née Mauger, was the widow of Francis Bartlet, a St Aubin merchant who had obtained the right to farm import duties and anchorage fees. In 1741 she left 100 livres tournois to the poor of each parish and to the Island, 50,000 livres tournois for the endowment of a poor house, with a further endowment for its upkeep. In 1765 building of the poor house began on a plot of land 'on the sandhills of St Helier'. The General Hospital, now present on the site, is no longer used for housing the poor and aged. It has replaced the original building, most of which was gutted by fire in 1859.
