The Victoria Cross

One of the first men to win the Victoria Cross was Jerseyman, George Ingouville in 1855 for services in the Crimean War. He was one of the original 62 recipients of the medal to be decorated by Queen Victoria at the first investiture of the VC at
Hyde Park in 1857.

The Victoria Cross is the highest military award in Great Britain, awarded for extreme bravery in the face of the enemy. Originally VCs were cast from the bronze of Russian guns captured during the Crimean War.

Four VCs are held, three of which are on public display.

Two VCs awarded to Jack Counter and posthumously to Lt W A Macrae-Bruce along with other war medals in the Story of Jersey exhibition at the Jersey Museum.

The VC awarded to George Henry Ingouville, one of the first ever Naval VCs, is displayed at the Maritime Museum.
