Jerseymen in Canada; Chasing the Cod
Temporary Exhibition Gallery, Jersey Museum, 4 April to 10 November

Intrepid Jerseymen first crossed the Atlantic four centuries ago to make their fortunes fishing for cod in the Grand Banks off the coast of Newfoundland. Jerseymen in Canada tells the story of those Islanders who plied their trade in the small promontory and sheltered harbour of Pointe Ste Pierre, first as fishermen and then as traders and carriers. Thousands of miles from their Island roots these ex-pats lived lifestyles little different to domestic and commercial life in Jersey, even sending their children home to be educated and exporting their furniture and clothing to Canada. The monopoly system they developed became their downfall as fortunes made from Cod Trade were wiped out by banking scandals in Jersey in the late 19 th century.
